Multi-Vehicle Pileup on Highway 108 in Sonora Kills At Least One

 
SONORA, CA (October 19, 2021) – At least one person died in a multiple-vehicle pileup on Highway 108 in Sonora late Saturday afternoon.
 
The accident happened around 5:38 p.m. on October 16, near Lower Mono Way just east of the Crossroads Shopping Center. According to the California Highway Patrol, several vehicles collided for unknown reasons. Two of them caught fire, and another one went about 80 feet down an embankment and another 50 feet off the roadway.
 
A coroner was called to the scene a short time later and pronounced one person dead. The identity of the victim was not immediately available.
 
Crews closed the westbound lanes of the highway for several hours while they cleared the wreckage.
 
The cause of the crash and factors involved remain under investigation.
