Evening Fiery Crash on Highway 78 in San Marcos Leaves One Dead
SAN MARCOS, CA (March 29, 2021) – One person was killed Sunday evening after a fiery accident on Highway 78 in San Marcos, authorities said.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 8:32 p.m., March 28, near Twin Oaks Valley Road.
Officers said a Ford Mustang was traveling on Rancheros Drive when it veered off for unknown reasons and landed on the freeway. It then struck a light pole, overturned on its roof near an embankment and caught fire.
As a result, the driver died at the scene. The unidentified victim was believed to be the sole occupant in the car.
Officers partially blocked traffic on westbound Highway 78 as firefighters worked to put out the fire.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause and factors involved.
