Passenger Dies in Carmel Valley Wrong-Way Crash on Highway 56, Driver Suspected of DUI
CARMEL VALLEY, CA (July 12, 2021) – A passenger died in a DUI wrong-way accident on Highway 56 in Carmel Valley early Saturday morning.
The accident happened around 1:30 a.m. on July 10, just east of Carmel Country Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 22-year-old San Marcos man was driving a silver 1999 Honda Civic the wrong way along the eastbound Highway 56. He then collided head-on with a blue 2019 Mazda CX-5.
As a result, the passenger in the Honda suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The Mazda driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Police arrested the driver of the Honda on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
Crews closed the eastbound freeway until around 6:10 a.m. while the investigation was conducted.
