Wrong-Way Driver Causes Crash on Highway 101 in Santa Maria

 
SANTA MARIA, CA (June 28, 2021) – One person sustained injuries after a wrong-way hit-and-run crash on Highway 101 in Santa Maria.
 
The crash happened just before 5:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 22, just north of Alvin Avenue. Minutes before the collision was reported, CHP dispatchers received calls of a wrong-way driver traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway.
 
Upon arrival, officers located a 2002 green Honda Civic and a silver 2007 Ford Focus.
 
An initial investigation determined that a 45-year-old Santa Maria man was driving the Civic southbound at approximately 50 mph. At the same time, a male driver of the Focus was traveling the wrong way at a high rate of speed. The driver of the Civic did not have enough time for evasive maneuvers and the vehicles collided.
 
Immediately after the collision, the driver of the Focus fled on foot.
 
The driver of the Civic was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
 
The California Highway Patrol officers are still searching for the hit-and-run suspect.
