One Struck by UCSB Student in Pedestrian Crash on El Colegio and Camino Del Sur

GOLETA, CA (May 6, 2022) — One person sustained injuries in a pedestrian accident on El Colegio Road on Thursday, May 5.

According to California Highway Patrol Officer Dave Nees, the incident involved a vehicle driven by a UC Santa Barbara student and a pedestrian. It took place at the intersection of El Colegio Road and Camino Del Sur.

At around 12:30 p.m., the car driver took an unprotected left turn onto El Colegio. Then the vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing the crosswalk, Nees said. The crash happened outside Santa Ynez Apartments — one of UCSB’s university apartments.

University of California Police Department, California Highway Patrol (CHP), Santa Barbara County Fire Department, and Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office subsequently responded to the scene.

The pedestrian hit their head and may have suffered further injuries, Nees stated. Paramedics later carried the individual from the scene on a stretcher.

Nees also confirmed the driver to be a UCSB student.

If you’re behind the wheel, avoid distractions while driving and always look out for pedestrians. If you’re a pedestrian, cross the street at the designated crosswalk or intersection.
