One Dead after Collision with Train on Central Valley Highway at Madera Avenue [Shafter, CA]

Fatal Vehicle Versus Train Collision near Shafter

 
SHAFTER, CA (January 23, 2023) — A person died in a vehicle and train collision on Central Valley Highway at Madera Avenue in Shafter.
 
According to the authorities, the incident took place at about 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, January 19. It was not immediately clear how the collision happened. But the Kern County Fire Department said the firefighters, upon arrival at the scene, found the person lifeless inside a vehicle. They extricated the deceased once the coroner arrived and did an on-scene investigation.
 
Officials reported that there were about 60 passengers aboard the commuter train when the collision happened. Emergency responders assessed one passenger and one employee, but both declined treatment.
 
Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol and Shafter police shut down the roads. The railroad company temporarily ceased operations until after the investigation and cleanup on the scene.
 
The cause and circumstances leading up to the collision are under further investigation.
