CARPINTERIA, CA (June 30, 2021) — An officer was among three people injured in a police chase crash on Highway 101 near Casitas Pass Road Monday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident first happened around 3:25 p.m. For unknown reasons, a wrong-way driver in a reportedly stolen Mazda3 failed to yield to an officer making a traffic stop.

Subsequently, a chase took place, and the wrong-way driver led the officer onto Highway 150 but re-entered Highway 101 to correct his direction.

Soon after, the Mazda driver abruptly applied the brakes in the No. 1 lane. As a result, a gray Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling behind the CHP officer struck the officer who tried to avoid the crash with the Mazda3 in front of him.

Shortly after, paramedics arrived and transported the CHP male officer to a hospital with moderate injuries. Meanwhile, the Jeep and Mazda drivers sustained minor injuries.

At this time, the stolen vehicle driver remains under arrest. However, if any witnesses would like to add to this accident, please call the CHP.
