Rollover Crash on Big Pines Highway Kills Nubia Amaro and Injures Her Passenger

VALYERMO, CA (April 23, 2021)Nubia Amaro was killed and her passenger Melani Abernath was injured in a rollover crash in the Angeles National Forest Monday evening, April 19.

The fatal crash happened around 7:35 p.m. on Big Pines Highway west of Largo Vista Road near Valyermo. Amaro, a 29-year-old Littlerock resident, was driving a 2009 Ford Focus. She made an unsafe turn causing the car to drift onto the right shoulder and veer left across the eastbound lane.

The Focus then went through a barbed-wire fence and overturned down an embankment.

As a result, Amaro was ejected and died at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt.

Abernath, a 33-year-old Palmdale resident, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews airlifted her to a hospital for treatment.

It is unclear if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. The California Highway Patrol is investigating.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Nubia Amaro. We also wish Meilani Abernath a fast recovery.
