Nicole Schalles Arrested, One Killed in DUI Crash on Highway 70 near Middle Honcut Road
OROVILLE, CA (February 8, 2021) — Officials arrested a 35-year-old Chico woman identified as Nicole Schalles after a fatal DUI crash.
According to Officer Ben Draper, the crash occurred on Highway 70 near Middle Honcut Road at about 11:24 p.m. on Thursday, February 4.
It began when Schalles drove a 2018 Volvo SUV north on the highway behind an Acura model car. Then Schalles tried to pass the Acura. In the process, the right front of Schalles’ SUV crashed with the rear of the Acura.
The impact caused Schalles to go off the roadway into a perimeter fence.
The Acura lost control and went into a counterclockwise direction. Then it stopped on southbound Highway 70. That’s when a Ford Focus moved south and crash with the back part of the Acura.
The Acura driver died at the scene. The driver of the Ford Focus sustained minor injuries.
CHP said Schalles was under the combined influence of drugs and alcohol. Authorities arrested Schalles on DUI and manslaughter and held her at the Butte County Jail.
Authorities said all involved vehicles each had one occupant and they all wore their seatbelts.
