Police Arrest Robert Hanson after Crash that Killed 9-Year-Old Monica Guzman in Desert Hot Springs

 
DESERT HOT SPRINGS, CA (December 13, 2021) – Monica Gonzalez Guzman was killed in a crash in Desert Hot Springs on Thursday afternoon.
 
The fatal crash happened just before 4:00 p.m. on December 9 in the 17500 block of Corkill Road. According to the Riverside County Fire Department, 87-year-old Robert Hanson of Desert Hot Springs was driving a white Cadillac sedan when he rear-ended a school bus.
 
After the crash, Hanson allegedly drove around the bus, hitting a speed limit sign and plowing into four young students walking on the shoulder.
 
Guzman, a 9-year-old girl from Desert Hot Springs, died at the scene, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Coroner Office.
 
One of the students suffered serious injuries and the other two had minor injuries. They were transported to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment.
 
The children are students at Julius Corsini Elementary School.
 
Meanwhile, Hanson sustained minor injuries. Police booked him at the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run causing death.
 
Hanson posted $75,000 bail on Friday. He is tentatively set to appear in court on Feb. 17 at the Larson Justice Center, according to jail records.
 
The investigation is ongoing.
