Innocent Bystander Dies after Saving Child from Suspect Running from Police in Sanger

 
SANGER, CA (April 1, 2022) – Minerva Camacho died in a high-speed chase in Sanger on Tuesday night.
 
The fatal crash happed around 6:20 p.m. March 29 near Greenwood Avenue and Almond Avenue. According to the Sanger Police Department, an officer saw an SUV with three men inside driving erratically.
 
Before the officer was able to stop the vehicle, one of the passengers jumped out and threw something into the yard before jumping back in. Police said that item was later discovered to be a loaded handgun.
 
Officers pursued the SUV as it sped up. Refusing to stop, the driver eventually lost control of the SUV and hopped a curb into the driveway of a home.
 
Camacho, a 65-year-old Sanger resident, and a young child were in the pathway of the vehicle as it hopped the curb. Camacho pushed the child out of the way before the vehicle struck her. She was pinned under the SUV as it collided with the house.
 
Responding paramedics rushed Camacho to a hospital, where she later died. The child was unharmed.
 
The suspects, 21-year-old Adrain Valencia of Sanger and 31-year-old Salmon Zaragoza of Santa Maria, ran from the crash scene. Police later arrested them.
 
Both are facing several charges including gross vehicular manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony hit-and-run.
 
An investigation is ongoing.
