River Altamirano, Michelle Ibarra Die in Accident on 805 Freeway

 
NATIONAL CITY, CA (October 22, 2021) — Two people were hit and killed by two different vehicles on the 805 Freeway near Plaza Boulevard on Sunday evening, October 17.
 
26-year-old Michelle Ibarra and 28-year-old River Altamirano died at the scene, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal incident happened around 8:25 p.m. Ibarra and Altamirano were inside a Toyota XA that collided with a Honda Civic on the northbound side of the freeway.
 
They exited the car and jumped over the center median wall. However, for unknown reasons they attempted to run across the southbound freeway lanes.
 
A Chevrolet Silverado hit Ibarra, while a Mazda sedan struck Altamirano.
 
Ibarra and Altamirano died of blunt force injuries, according to police. A GoFundMe account for Ibarra was set up for funeral expenses. In addition, the remaining amount will go to her two surviving children.
 
Detectives are investigating why the couple tried to run across the freeway or what led to the initial crash. As a result, any witnesses with information should contact CHP.
