Rider Dies after Colliding with Big Rig on Highway 119 at Airport Road

 
TAFT, CA (June 9, 2022)Michael Edward Lopez was killed in a motorcycle accident on Highway 119 early Saturday morning.
 
The accident happened around 1:20 a.m. on June 4, at Airport Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, Lopez was riding his 2006 Yamaha motorcycle eastbound on the highway. He attempted to pass a 2011 Freightliner and struck the rear left portion of the truck.
 
The impact of the crash caused significant injuries on Lopez after he was thrown from his bike.
 
Despite life-saving efforts, Lopez died at the scene. He was a 22-year-old Bakersfield resident, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.
 
The driver of the big rig, 47-year-old Mendez Alvarez, did not sustain any injuries.
 
It is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
