Motorcyclist Dies after Struck by Car on Highway 1 near Waddell Creek

 
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA (April 21, 2021) – Michael Fertig was killed in a motorcycle crash Saturday afternoon in Santa Cruz County.
 
The crash happened just before 5:30 p.m. on Highway 1 near Waddell Creek. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 59-year-old victim from San Francisco was driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle. At the same time, 59-year-old Lisa Skrzynecki of Los Gatos was driving a white Subaru southbound on the highway.
 
For unknown reasons, Skrzynecki did not see the motorcycle ahead of her. She hit the back of the motorcycle, ejecting Fertig.
 
Despite life-saving efforts, Fertig died at the scene.
 
Skrzynecki had minor injuries and declined treatment.
 
CHP shut down Highway 1 in both directions for approximately five hours while they worked on the scene.
 
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but the CHP said they do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor.
