Pedestrian Marquin Nwude Dies after Struck by Moneice Newell During High-Speed Pursuit in South LA

 
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA (June 20, 2022) – A high-speed pursuit ended with a pedestrian being struck and killed in South Los Angeles on Thursday, June 16.
 
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 29-year-old Marquin Nwude.
 
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers tried to stop a stolen Toyota Avalon around 12:30 a.m. in the Florence neighborhood when the driver fled at a high rate of speed.
 
Police briefly pursued the Avalon but backed off because the driver drove too fast and erratically. After that, the car struck Nwude, who crossed the street at East Florence Avenue and South Central Avenue.
 
Nwude died at the scene. Official records state the car dragged him more than 500 feet.
 
The Avalon struck several vehicles before crashing near East 71st Street.
 
Police believe 41-year-old Moneice Newell allegedly ran a red light, hitting and killing Nwude. Newell sustained non-life-threatening injuries. However, authorities will test her for any possible drug or alcohol consumption.
 
Newell is being held without bail. She is expected face charges in connection with the stolen vehicle and the pedestrian’s death. However, the investigation is ongoing.
