Lance Cpl. Alberto Lucio Dies in Crash while Helping Driver on 5 Freeway in Oceanside, Darryl Sheffey Arrested

 
OCEANSIDE, CA (December 14, 2021) – A U.S. Marine was fatally struck by a truck driven by Darryl Sheffey while helping accident victims on Monday, December 6.
 
20-year-old Lance Cpl. Alberto Lucio died at the scene of the accident, according to police.
 
Lucio pulled over around 3:20 a.m. on southbound 5 Freeway near Las Pulgas Road. He stopped to help a couple that had stalled their Ford Edge after a single-vehicle accident that left the vehicle’s lights disabled.
 
An international box truck, driven by a 47-year-old who has not been named, then hit the Marine and SUV, officials said.
 
Police pronounced Lucio dead at the scene.
 
Inside the crashed SUV was the driver, 36-year-old Sheffey, and a 31-year-old woman. Officials transported both to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla with serious injuries.
 
Police booked Sheffey into the San Diego County Jail on suspicion of DUI and multiple felony charges, once he is released from the hospital. Police did not provide anymore detail on the felony charges.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, police cleared the truck driver of any wrongdoing and was not under the influence.
