Sheriff’s Identify 8-Year-Old Girl Hit and Killed while Walking on Foggy Road
FRESNO COUNTY, CA (November 14, 2021) – Maria Ortiz was hit and killed on Friant Road in Fresno County late Friday night as her mother fought with her partner in their car.
The accident happened just before 10:00 p.m. on November 12, near Willow Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 8-year-old victim was traveling in a vehicle with her 22-year-old mother, her 2-year-old sister and 51-year-old Juan Jose DelTorro Ramirez.
The children’s mother and Ramirez began arguing and pulled over the car to the shoulder of Friant road.
That was when Ortiz jumped out of the car, walked out onto Friant Road, and was hit by another car traveling on the roadway.
The driver of the second car did not see her in time because of the thick fog. They stayed on scene and cooperated with authorities.
Ortiz suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
Police arrested Ramirez on domestic violence charges. They booked him into the Fresno County Jail at $5,000 bail. They also arrested the mother for misdemeanor DUI.
An investigation is ongoing.
We would like to express our sincere condolences to the bereaved family and friends of Maria Ortiz.
