Driver and Passenger Die after Colliding into Pickup Truck on Highway 178 near Kern River Canyon

 
KERN COUNTY, CA (January 2, 2023) – A man and a woman died in two-vehicle accident on Highway 178 near the Kern River Canyon Friday morning on December 30.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, a 64-year-old woman from Weldon was driving a Toyota Corolla westbound on the highway with a 66-year-old male passenger from Lake Isabella. For unknown reasons, she failed to negotiate a curve and lost control. She then swerved into the eastbound lanes and collided into a Ford F-150, driven by 48-year-old John Rodrigues of Bakersfield.
 
As a result, both the man and woman in the Corolla died at the scene. They were not yet identified.
 
It is unclear if Rodrigues was injured in the crash.
 
Alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors. CHP officials said the crash happened in wet and cloudy conditions.
