Wrong-Way Driver Dies after Colliding with SUV on Highway 99 in Madera County

 
MADERA COUNTY, CA (April 11, 2022) – A man was killed in a wrong-way accident on Highway 99 in Madera County early Sunday morning.
 
The accident happened around 12:30 a.m. on April 10, just north of Avenue 18 1/2. According to the Madera County Sheriff’s Office, a white GMC pickup truck traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway when it collided head-on with a gray SUV.
 
The impact caused the truck to burst into flames.
 
Responding firefighters extinguished the fire and found the male driver inside truck. The victim died at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, four people in the SUV were transported to Community Regional Medical Center with moderate to major injuries. There was no update on their conditions.
 
Deputies are still investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
