Driver Dies after Colliding with Big Rig on South Union Avenue

 
BAKERSFIELD, CA (November 22, 2021) – A man died and a woman and child suffered serious injuries after a big rig accident on South Union Avenue in Bakersfield, Friday morning.
 
The accident happened around 8:50 a.m. on November 19, at Jose Ramos Court. According to the California Highway Patrol, a GMC Envoy SUV was traveling southbound at more than 60 mph with limited visibility due to fog. At the same time, the big rig was heading eastbound across the southbound lanes.
 
The SUV was unable to stop and smashed into the trailer’s left side, becoming partially wedged underneath.
 
As a result, the man driving the SUV died at the scene. He was not yet identified.
 
Paramedics rushed the female passenger and a little girl, between 2 to 3 years old, to Kern Medical Center with serious injuries. The girl had not been secured in a car seat, the CHP said.
 
Meanwhile, the big rig driver was unharmed.
 
Crews closed all lanes of South Union Avenue for four hours while they cleared the wreckage.
 
Alcohol or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
