Fatal Galt Train Crash at Spring Street and Saddle Crest Circle

GALT, CA (February 9, 2021) — A man died early Friday January 29 in a train crash at Spring Street and Saddle Crest Circle in Galt.

According to the California Highway Patrol, reports about the crash came in at around 12:15 a.m.

Initial findings revealed that the man was driving a Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck when he attempted to drive around the railroad crossing gates. Meanwhile, a Union Pacific train was southbound on the tracks, approaching Twin Cities Road at about 50 miles per hour.

The train conductor told CHP that the pickup was westbound on Twin Cities Road. It was approaching the crossing gates which were in the down position with red lights flashing.

The pickup reportedly slowed down as it neared the crossing as if about to stop, but then it accelerated. Subsequently, it tried to go around the east side of the crossing gates over the tracks before the train arrived.

The conductor said he applied the emergency brake, but the train hit the pickup and then pushed it over 3,000 feet. Both vehicles stopped south of the Spring Street railroad crossing.

The driver of the pickup, a 68-year-old Walnut Grove man, died in the crash. Meanwhile, this fatal crash remains under investigation.
