Fatal Rear-End Accident on 5 Freeway in National City

 
NATIONAL CITY, CA (June 21, 2021) – A man was killed in a rear-end accident on 5 Freeway in National City Friday evening, June 18.
 
The accident happened around 8:10 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway approaching Main and Division streets. According to the California Highway Patrol, a tow truck was stopped on the right shoulder when a black Honda Accord rear-ended it. The car then became wedged and stuck underneath the tow truck.
 
As a result, the male driver of the Accord died at the scene. He was the sole occupant of the car. His identity was not immediately available.
 
Meanwhile, the tow truck driver did not sustain any injuries. He extinguished a small fire that ignited in the destroyed engine of the badly damaged sedan.
 
Caltrans closed two right lanes of the freeway after the crash. They re-opened the roadway roughly around 11:15 p.m.
 
The exact cause of the crash remains under investigation.
