Police Arrest Pedro Cortez for DUI Hit-and-Run after Fatally Striking Pedestrian in Selma
SELMA, CA (April 24, 2022) – A man died and police arrested Pedro Epigmeneo Cortez for DUI hit-and-run after a fatal crash in Selma on Friday night.
The crash happened just after 10:30 p.m. on April 3 at the intersection of Rose Avenue and Highland Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 57-year-old suspect from Selma was driving a Nissan Versa when he struck a 58-year-old male pedestrian who was walking within the westbound lane of Rose.
Cortez did not stop to render aid, leaving the victim with critical injuries.
The pedestrian died at the scene. He was not yet identified.
A Fresno County Sheriff Deputy was first to arrive on scene and observed a fluid trail leading to the west. In addition, the front bumper from the Nissan, including the license plate, was left at the scene.
After a search, the suspect vehicle was located near the scene.
CHP officers contacted Cortez at his residence and conducted a hit-and-run investigation. As a result, they determined that he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Officers arrested Cortez and booked him into the Fresno County Jail on felony DUI and hit-and-run charges.
At this time, an investigation is ongoing.
