Hit-and-Run Driver Kills Man Trying to Emerge from Manhole in Panorama City

PANORAMA CITY, CA (July 13, 2021) – A man died in a pedestrian hit-and-run on Parthenia Street in Panorama City Saturday morning.

The incident happened around 10:25 a.m. on July 10. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the man in his 20s attempted to climb out of a manhole when a passing pickup truck drove over the manhole cover. The cover was pushed down on top of the man and he fell back down inside under the street. The truck kept heading west on Parthenia Street.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to treat the man, but he died at the scene.

Video of the incident shows the cover slowly lifting a couple of inches above the ground when the pickup strikes it. The cover flies into the air and lands next to the manhole. The victim is not seen in the footage.

It was unknown why the man was in the manhole. It was also unclear if the driver was aware that a person was under the cover. Authorities described the vehicle as a white Chevrolet Silverado, from model year 2008 to 2012.
