Crash on 15 Freeway in Escondido Kills Passenger, DUI Suspect Arrested

 
ESCONDIDO, CA (December 21, 2022) – A man died and police arrested Nicole Capatanos after a DUI crash in Escondido early Sunday morning on December 18.
 
The fatal crash happened around 2:54 a.m. on 15 Freeway, just south of Deer Springs Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 43-year-old suspect was driving a silver Ford Fusion with a 45-year-old male passenger.
 
For unknown reasons, the Fusion veered off the freeway and rolled over several times before landing on North Center City Parkway.
 
As a result, the passenger suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was not yet identified.
 
Capatanos was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police later arrested her on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter.
 
An investigation is ongoing. Officers urged anyone with further information to contact the CHP Oceanside Area Office at 760-643-3400.
