Head-On Accident on Highway 78 in Imperial County Kills 1 and Injures Several Others

 
IMPERIAL COUNTY, CA (August 1, 2021) – A man died and several others sustained injuries in a head-on accident on Highway 78 in Imperial County Friday evening.
 
The accident happened around 8:40 p.m. on July 30, just east of Whitlock Road near Glamis. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 52-year-old Las Vegas man was driving alone west on Highway 78 in a 2006 Mercedes sedan. For unknown reasons, he collided with the rear of a passing semi-truck trailer that was heading east.
 
The Mercedes continued westbound and collided head-on with an eastbound Jeep, driven by 33-year-old J. Arredondo of Blythe.
 
As a result, the Las Vegas man died at the scene. His name was not immediately available.
 
Two occupants in the Jeep were pinned and had to be extricated by Brawley firefighters.
 
Arredondo suffered major injuries and was flown to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. An 11-year-old boy sustained serious injuries, while a 7-year-old boy in the Jeep suffered moderate injuries. Both were flown to Loma Linda Medical Center.
 
A ground ambulance took two other juveniles, 15-year-old girl, and 10-year-old girl, to Pioneers Memorial Hospital with moderate to major injuries.
 
At this time, CHP officials are still working on the accident.
