Fatal Electric Bike Accident on Sumner Avenue in Rio Del Mar

 
RIO DEL MAR, CA (January 23, 2021) – A man was killed after an electric bike accident on Sumner Avenue Saturday night.
 
The accident happened around 6:00 p.m. just south of Dolphin Drive.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the man was driving his electric bike at approximately 30 mph when he struck a raised median. The impact ejected him into the roadway.
 
As a result, the bicyclist suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. Authorities only described him as a 57-year-old Soquel resident. His identification is pending family and next of kin notification.
 
CHP officials said the victim was wearing a helmet.
 
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident on Sumner Avenue. However, police are conducting a massive investigation and will provide an update when available.
