Bicyclist Dies after Crash involving Long Beach City Employee on Oregon Avenue

LONG BEACH, CA (February 21, 2022) – A man was killed in a bicycle accident at Oregon Avenue and 17th Street in Long Beach on Friday morning.
 
The accident happened just after 7:40 a.m. on February 18, near Pacific Coast Highway. According to the Long Beach Police Department, the man was riding his bicycle westbound and went through a stop sign without stopping. A city-owned Ford F250 then struck him in the middle of the intersection.
 
When officers arrived, they found the man lying in the roadway with fatal injuries. They pronounced him dead at the scene.
 
Meanwhile, the 59-year-old employee remained on scene and cooperated with police. He was an on-duty Long Beach city employee. The city’s Occupational Health Division assessed him and sent him home for the remainder of the shift, officials said.
 
Impaired driving and speed were not believed to be factors in the crash.
