65-Year-Old Man Riding Electric Bicycle Dies after Hit by Truck on Highway 101 in Solana Beach

 
SOLANA BEACH, CA (February 28, 2022) – A 65-year-old man was killed in a bicycle accident on Highway 101 in Solana Beach, Saturday afternoon.
 
The fatal accident happened just after 12:30 p.m. on February 26, along the northbound highway from Lomas Santa Fe Drive. According to the San Diego Sheriff’s Office, the man was riding his new electric bicycle in the designated bicycle lane.
 
While in the bicycle lane, the man attempted to overtake a slower bicyclist traveling in the same direction. As he did so, his e-bike began to wobble and he fell into the nearest lane of traffic that was occupied by a slow-moving Dodge truck. The truck then hit the bicyclist.
 
Paramedics responded and rushed the man to Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, where he later succumbed to his injuries
 
The driver of the truck remained on scene and cooperated with authorities.
 
Drugs and/or alcohol were not believed factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
