SHERMAN ISLAND, CA (May 30, 2022) – A man died and three children were injured after a head-on accident on Highway 160, late Sunday evening.
The accident happened around 10:20 p.m. on May 29 near the Antioch Bridge and West Brannan Island Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the 38-year-old San Ramon man was driving a Mazda southbound on the highway at a high rate of speed.
He then crossed over the double-yellow lines and collided head-on into a northbound Audi, driven by a 70-year-old Rio Vista woman. The impact caused the Mazda to overturn on its roof.
The driver of the Mazda died at the scene. Three juveniles in the Mazda, a 15-year-old girl and two young boys, ages 6 and 4, suffered serious injuries.
A helicopter took one of the boys to Children’s Hospital in Oakland and the other to the UC Davis Medical Center.
Meanwhile, the Audi driver also sustained serious injuries but now in stable condition.
Authorities said the San Ramon man is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Further investigation is underway.
