Man Dies, 3 Boys Hospitalized in DUI Crash on Ellenwood Road in Waterford
WATERFORD, CA (April 21, 2023) — A man died, and three boys were injured in a DUI accident on Ellenwood Road near Oakdale-Waterford Highway.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal single-car crash happened around 9:45 p.m. Friday.
For DUI-related reasons, a 26-year-old man failed to properly negotiate a curve on Ellenwood Road. Subsequently, his Ford Mustang traveled onto the east shoulder and crashed into a tree.
The unidentified driver and an 8-year-old boy were ejected from the vehicle. Two other boys, ages six and eight, exited the vehicle before the car caught on fire.
Soon after, paramedics arrived and airlifted the 8-year-old child to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento for treatment of major injuries. The other two children sought hospital care as a precaution. As for the driver, he perished at the scene.
In the investigation, authorities learned that the driver and 8-year-old boy did not wear their seatbelts. In addition, police confirmed DUI played a factor.
