Man Dies after Struck by Car on 5 Freeway in Redding Early Saturday Morning

 
REDDING, CA (February 19, 2024) – A man was hit and killed by a car on 5 Freeway in Redding early Saturday morning on February 17.
 
The fatal crash happened around 4:30 a.m. along the southbound freeway, just north of Knighton Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2011 Kia Soul saw a man in dark clothing walk from the right shoulder of the freeway into the lane in front of his SUV.
 
The driver slammed on the brakes but was unable to avoid hitting the man.
 
As a result of the crash, the pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. His identity was not immediately available.
 
The driver of the SUV was not injured but his vehicle received major damage. He stayed on scene and cooperated with authorities.
 
The circumstances of this fatality are still under investigation.
