SDSU Director of Facilities Planning Laura Shinn Dies after San Diego Bicycle Accident, Adam Milavetz Arrested
SAN DIEGO, CA (July 23, 2021) — Police identified the fatal victim after she was struck by a car on Pershing Drive near Florida Drive Tuesday morning.
The bicyclist was identified as 57-year-old Laura Shinn, a prominent architect and planner who oversaw the planning and design of several San Diego State University facilities. Shinn worked as SDSU’s director of facilities planning.
Shinn was riding a bike north on Pershing Drive when a 2011 Prius — also headed north — drifted into a bike lane and struck Shinn‘s bicycle from behind. The crash happened about 7:30 a.m. just south of Morley Field Disc Golf Course.
After that, medics started CPR and took Shinn to a hospital. However, she died later.
San Diego Police Department believe the driver of the Prius was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.
Police arrested 38-year-old Adam Milavetz Tuesday and booked into county jail. On Thursday, police charged Milavetz in San Diego Superior Court with murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of drugs and causing injury. He pleaded not guilty.
Milavetz got out of his car after the crash. However, he ran across the street and tossed two bags over a fence. Police later recovered the bags, which contained “what appeared to be methamphetamine.”
Our hearts and deepest sympathies are with the bereaved family and friends of Laura Shinn.
