Scooter Rider Suffers Critical Injuries in South LA Hit-and-Run, Karen Camacho Detained
SOUTH LOS ANGELES, CA (October 19, 2021) – Police arrested the hit-and-run driver a day after a 55-year-old man on a scooter suffered critical injuries on Thursday morning, October 14.
30-year-old Karen Camacho was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run after she turned herself in to police around 1:30 p.m. Friday at LAPD’s Central Station. Her attorney was present.
The crash happened just before 10:40 a.m. on Hooper Avenue near East 48th Place. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the man was riding his scooter northbound on Hooper Avenue. At the same time, a gray Honda Civic negotiated an unsafe left turn onto East 48th Place and struck him.
The man was knocked off his scooter and ejected onto the street. Paramedics arrived soon after and took the man to a hospital in critical condition, where he remains hospitalized.
The driver of the Honda Civic – identified now as Camacho – stopped momentarily, then fled the scene without identifying themselves or rendering aid as required by law. The day after the accident, Camacho turned herself in to police custody.
