Coroner Identifies Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Vehicle in Winton
WINTON, CA (January 4, 2022) – Juan Macias was killed in a pedestrian accident on Almond Avenue in Winton Monday last week.
The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. on December 27, just between Cypress Avenue and North Winton Way. Macias was pushing a shopping cart across Almond Avenue when a Chevrolet Silverado driving eastbound at about 25 mph struck him.
Authorities said it appears the driver did not see Macias who was wearing dark clothing at the time of the collision in the rain and in an area with low lighting.
After the crash, Macias came to rest on the south edge of Almond Avenue near a Frank Sparkes Elementary School driveway.
First responders attempted life-saving aid, but Macias succumbed to his injuries. He was 41 years old, according to the Merced County Sheriff Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and cooperated with officers.
According to the CHP, neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash. Further investigation is underway.
We would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Juan Macias.
