Stolen Car Crash in Chico Kills Driver and Seriously Injures Another
CHICO, CA (June 9, 2023) – Joshua Payan died in a stolen car crash in Chico Tuesday evening on June 6.
The fatal crash around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of East Avenue and Cohasset Road. According to the Chico Police Department, an officer had spotted a stolen blue Dodge sedan at East and Mariposa Avenues. The driver sped off. The officer decided not to pursue due to the wet roads and dangers of pursuing in a neighborhood.
About a mile to the west at East Avenue and Cohasset Road, the Dodge ran a red light and struck a silver Hyundai.
Payan, a 33-year-old Chico resident, was driver of the stolen car. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Butte County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the silver car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Further investigation is underway.
