2 Teens Dead after Driver Crashes onto Torrey Pines State Beach in La Jolla, Joshua Manzanares Identified

LA JOLLA, CA (April 29, 2022) — Two teens died after a car crashed on Torrey Pines State Beach from Torrey Pines Road, late Monday.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office identified one of the two teenage boys that died in the crash as 19-year-old Joshua Adonai Manzanares of Lake Elsinore.

According to the San Diego Police, the fatal single-car crash happened around 11:00 p.m. For unknown reasons, a 2020 Subaru WRX at a high rate of speed lost control and struck a center median on Torrey Pines Road. As a result, the car crashed through a guardrail, went over the ledge, and overturned on the embankment before coming to a stop on the beach.

Manzanares was one of five people in the car, including the driver. According to police, Manzanares was not wearing a seatbelt.

He and another passenger ejected from the car and died at the scene. However, the identity of the other fatally injured youth has not been released.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Manzanares.

Emergency crews freed three teenagers from the mangled car. After that, they took them to Scripps Memorial Hospital for trauma treatment ranging from major to superficial.

The 19-year-old driver escaped the accident with minor injuries, according to police.

Though investigators suspect that intoxication was a factor in the crash, it remained unclear whether the driver will face criminal charges in the case.

We would like to express our sympathies to the families and friends of Joshua Adonai Manzanares and the other victim.
