Jovan Cortez Arrested, 7-Year-old Jose Castillo Jr. and Father Jose Castillo Killed in Fresno County DUI Crash

 
FRESNO COUNTY, CA (May 3, 2021) – Jose Castillo and his 7-year-old son Jose Castillo Jr. died in a DUI accident Saturday evening in Fresno County.
 
The accident happened just before 8:00 p.m. on May 1, near the intersection of Marks Avenue and North Avenue. According to the California Highway Patrol, a 22-year-old Jovan Adam Cortez was traveling north on Marks Avenue when he ran a stop sign and slammed into the SUV carrying a family of six.
 
The impact ejected the 45-year-old father and his son from the SUV, along with two others. Both Castillo and Castillo Jr. died at the scene.
 
The other victims in the SUV were the boy’s mother, a seven-year-old boy, a four-year-old girl and an 11-year-old girl.
 
All of the children suffered major injuries. The mother suffered moderate injuries and officers say she was the only one wearing a seatbelt.
 
The suspect’s truck burst into flames upon impact. Deputies jumped into action to save Cortez and his 10-month old daughter, who was also in the truck.
 
Police arrested Cortez and booked him into the Fresno County jail on multiple charges. Bail is set at nearly $400,000.
