Multi-Vehicle Accident on Highway 184 in Southeast Bakersfield, Jose Alvarado Killed

BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 20, 2021) – The man who died on March 28 in a collision on Highway 184 has been identified as 78-year-old Arvin resident Jose Luis Cardenas Alvarado, according to the Kern County Coroner’s Office.

The department said Alvarado stopped in a Chevrolet S-10 westbound on Wilson Road at the intersection of Highway 184. At the same time, a 2007 Peterbilt semi-truck was heading northbound on the highway.

Meanwhile, a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban drove southbound on Highway 184. Just before the Peterbuilt reached the Chevrolet S-10’s location, the S-10 entered the intersection and attempted to make a left turn in front of the semi-truck.

Due to the driver failing to yield the right-of-way, the Peterbilt struck the Chevrolet S-10. As a result, the Peterbuilt traveled over the centerline and into oncoming traffic, colliding with the Chevrolet Suburban.

Alvarado was not wearing a seatbelt and ejected from his S-10. He died at the scene, according to police.

Two occupants of the Suburban, including a 5-year-old girl, suffered major injuries and were taken to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

In addition, the driver of the Suburban had minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital, according to the CHP. The driver of the semi-truck also suffered minor injuries, but sought out his own aid.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jose Alvarado.
