CARLSBAD, CA (May 20, 2022) – Authorities arrested 19-year-old John Jason Martinez-Gutierrez of Spokane, Washington after he crashed a car into a group of pedestrians at a Carlsbad strip mall, early Sunday morning.
 
According to the Carlsbad Police Department, the incident happened on May 15, shortly after 2:00 a.m. Martinez-Gutierrez reportedly entered his vehicle in the middle of a fight in a parking lot at Village Faire in the 300 block of Carlsbad Village Drive.
 
Then, he drove into a group of pedestrians. As per reports, the suspect reversed and intentionally struck more pedestrians before leaving the scene.
 
Emergency crews transported four victims to nearby hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
 
On Tuesday, May 17, authorities arrested Martinez-Gutierrez at a motel in Escondido. He was booked into Vista Detention Center on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
