DUI Wrong-Way Driver Johanna Mayapuga Causes Fatal Crash on Highway 1 in Watsonville

 
WATSONVILLE, CA (February 23, 2021) – Police arrested 22-year-old Johanna Mayapuga for DUI after a fatal accident early Monday morning in Watsonville.
 
Mayapuga, a Santa Cruz resident, was driving the wrong way in a 2015 Nissan on Highway 1 when she hit a 2002 BMW, just south of Airport Boulevard around 2:17 a.m.
 
As a result, the BMW’s passenger, a 45-year-old woman from Moss Landing, died at the scene. The Santa Cruz County Sheriff-Coroner’s office will release her name once family members are properly notified.
 
The driver of the BMW, a 46-year-old man from Moss Landing, suffered major injuries.
 
Meanwhile, Mayapuga sustained moderate injuries. Police later arrested her on felony DUI.
 
Further investigation is underway.
