Joel Gomez Dies at Pipeline Construction Site on Hoyt Park Drive near Scripps Ranch Boulevard

SCRIPPS RANCH, CA (September 4, 2024)Joel Gomez died at a pipeline construction site on Hoyt Park Drive near Scripps Ranch Boulevard.

According to the San Diego Fire Rescue Department officials, the fatal construction accident happened across from Scripps Ranch High School around 4:00 a.m. Wednesday.

For reasons that require further investigation, a 20-foot-deep trench collapsed onto 27-year-old Joel Olea Gomez, of San Marcos. The destruction left him trapped under dirt and a large concrete pipe that crews were installing as part of a water system project.

Despite emergency personnel’s arrival at the scene, Gomez passed away from his injuries.

According to officials, an unstable foundation possibly led to the 4-foot-wide pipe falling onto Gomez. Another worker was in the pit at the time of the incident but avoided getting trapped.

Following the accident, emergency personnel shored up the trench to prevent any additional collapses before removing Gomez’s body, which demanded about four hours for this process.

At this time, CAL/OSHA officials are looking into the possibilities that could have led to this incident.
