Jesus Meza-Leyva Killed after Auberry Car Crash on Highway 168 near Auberry Road
AUBERRY, CA (January 7, 2022) — A man died in a car accident on Highway 168 near Auberry Road at around 10:15 p.m. on New Year’s Day.
Officials from the Fresno County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 21-year-old Jesus Meza-Leyva of Caruthers. However, police say he may have been living in Clovis at the time of the crash.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. near Highway 168, east of Auberry Road. Officers say Meza-Leyva was driving westbound on Highway 168 in a Toyota MR2 when the collision occurred.
Meza-Leyva lost control of the vehicle after navigating a crest in the roadway. After that, officials say the MR2 then spun out and entered the eastbound lane, crashing into a pickup truck that was traveling in that direction.
Meza-Leyva was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say the driver of the pickup claimed they had no injuries from the collision.
Officers continue to investigate what happened. So far they do not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the incident.
