High-Speed Police Chase in Salinas Ends in Crash Between Suspect Civilian Driver
SALINAS, CA (May 16, 2023) – Jesus Alberto Cervantes was seriously injured when a high-speed police chase ended in a crash in Salinas early Saturday morning on May 13.
The chase began about 3:45 a.m. near East Laurel Drive and Towt Street when Salinas police attempted to pull over a gray Honda Accord for a traffic violation.
Cervantes, 43, drove off south on Highway 101 on-ramp from East Market Street and made a U-turn at the top of the ramp. That was where he collided with a 2015 Honda Accord traveling at approximately 70 mph. The Honda spun out and came to rest about 15 feet down an embankment.
Firefighters extricated Cervantes from his vehicle and took him to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The driver of the other vehicle, also a 43-year-old man, was treated by paramedics at the scene and released.
Police said Cervantes was fleeing to avoid arrest for four felony warrants and faces new charges of resisting arrest and evading officers.
Further investigation into this crash is underway.
During a traffic stop, immediately pull over. Do not attempt to flee the scene. It can only lead to dangerous accidents. Always choose to be a responsible driver.
