Wife of Harbor Police Chief Dies in Jamul Crash when Boat Flies Off Trailer, Hits Car

 
JAMUL, CA (February 9, 2022)Jennifer Kathleen Nichols died after her car slammed head-on into a boat on Highway 94 in Jamul on Saturday night.
 
The accident happened around 6:20 p.m. on February 5 near Honey Springs Road. According to the CHP, 28-year-old Robert Keith Thomas was driving a 2000 Mazda B3000 truck pulling a boat on a trailer. For unknown reasons, the boat detached from the trailer as he turned west onto Highway 94.
 
The boat went flying and fell onto the road directly into the path of a 2016 Fiat 500, driven by Nichols, which was heading east on the highway. The front of the boat slammed head-on into the left front of the Fiat.
 
Nichols, a 49-year-old Bonita resident, suffered multiple blunt force injuries. She later died at a trauma center. She is the wife of interim Harbor Police Chief Kirk Nichols. The police chief was a passenger in the car and suffered minor injuries.
 
Thomas, who lives in Jamestown in Tuolumne County, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.
 
At this time, this fatal crash is under investigation.
