Off-Duty LA County Deputy Dies after Hit by Flying Tire on 5 Freeway, Another Deputy Norman Anpree Hospitalized

LOS ANGELES, CA (March 31, 2021) – An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy died when a tire smashed into his windshield Sunday morning, March 28.

Around 5:30 a.m., 35-year-old Jeffrey McKee of Norco was driving on 5 Freeway in East Los Angeles when his car was struck by a front tire that flew off a Toyota Tundra, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The tire hit the roof and windshield of McKee’s Volvo S40. He suffered head injuries and died at the scene.

After striking McKee’s car, the tire bounced and another car hit it. The driver got out but minutes later, his own car struck him after another vehicle rear-ended it.

The driver, Deputy Norman Anpree, was hospitalized with major injuries.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Tundra did not sustain any injuries.

McKee, who joined the department in 2006, was driving home from work at the Inmate Reception Center in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

An investigation into this accident is underway.
