Jason Cavannagh Dies after Car Crash with Big Rig on 10 Freeway in Cabazon

 
CABAZON, CA (April 21, 2022) – Jason Cavannagh died in a fiery accident on 10 Freeway in Cabazon, early Tuesday morning.
 
The accident happened around 2:00 a.m. on April 19 just east of the Main Street overpass. According to the CHP, Cavannagh was driving a Toyota Tundra eastbound on the freeway when he drifted to the right for unknown reasons. He then crashed into the sand-filled attenuators.
 
The Toyota continued to scrape along the freeway’s K-rail and rolled over. It then finally came to rest on its side with no lights on and Cavannagh still inside.
 
Moments later, a Kenworth tractor towing a shipping container traveling at approximately 55 and 60 mph came up on the Toyota. The driver tried to swerve to miss hitting it, but unsuccessful.
 
The big rig smashed into the Toyota, causing both vehicles to burst into flames.
 
Cavannagh was unable to get out from the burning vehicle and died at the scene. He was a 38-year-old Newbury Park resident, according to the Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner’s Bureau.
 
Meanwhile, the 63-year-old driver of the Kenworth from Avondale, Arizona, was able to jump out of his rig while it was still moving. He suffered severe burn injuries. Paramedics took him to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
 
Drugs and/or alcohol have not been ruled out as a contributing factor. Further investigation is underway.
