RIVERSIDE, CA (May 19, 2021) – Authorities arrested an intoxicated driver after he ran into the back of a motorcyclist, causing the rider to be fatally ejected onto the roadway early Sunday morning, May 16.

Riverside County Sheriff-Coroner officials have since identified 55-year-old James Maloney of Corona as the victim killed in the collision. A coroner’s release indicated he died at the scene around at 2:30 a.m.

City of Riverside police and fire personnel arrived around 2:18 a.m. at the intersection of Indiana Avenue and the eastbound 91 Freeway onramp.

Officers determined the victim rode his motorcycle on Van Buren Boulevard approaching the 91 Freeway. After that, a pickup truck – driven by 52-year-old Gordon Richard Longhitano of Riverside – struck the motorcycle from behind.

The impact caused Maloney to eject from his motorcycle onto the roadway, where he later died.

Based on their investigation, officers arrested Longhitano and booked him into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside. Police charged him with suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI and DUI resulting in injury.

Online jail records indicate police released Longhitano the day after his arrest after he posted $75,000 bail. However, officials scheduled his arraignment at the Riverside Hall Of Justice on September 17.

We extend our deepest condolences to the grieving family and friends of James Maloney.
