LA COSTA, CA (March 24, 2022) – A man died while six others sustained injuries following a DUI crash on 5 Freeway, early Wednesday morning.
 
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident happened on March 23 at about 2:45 a.m. As per reports, a northbound Honda Civic swerved right into a Caltrans construction area.
 
The Honda driver then veered left and hit a Toyota Prius near La Costa Avenue.
 
The impact of the crash caused the Honda to go up an embankment and overturn. One of the passengers in the Honda was ejected from the vehicle.
 
Emergency crews pronounced the passenger dead at the scene. Authorities withheld the name of the 20-year-old victim, pending notification of next of kin.
 
The Honda driver, identified as 20-year-old Isidrone Martinez, sustained life-threatening injuries. Officers later arrested Martinez on suspicion of DUI.
 
Meanwhile, three other passengers – a 22-year-old Valley Center woman, a 20-year-old Oceanside man, and a 20-year-old Oceanside woman – sustained major injuries.
 
The occupants of the Toyota reportedly suffered minor injuries.
