Hit-and-Run Driver Crashes into Popular Taco Stand in Pomona, Gilberto Payan Identified

 
POMONA, CA (October 17, 2022) – Gilberto Cazares Payan died and twelve others were injured in a hit-and-run crash in Pomona on Friday evening, October 14.
 
The fatal crash happened around 7:30 p.m. in the 1600 block of Holt Avenue at Dudley Street, just in front of Cardenas Markets near Kiwanis Park.
 
According to the Pomona Police Department, a 26-year-old Pomona woman was driving a black sedan eastbound on Holt Avenue when she suddenly veered into westbound lanes. The sedan then jumped the curb and slammed into a crowded taco stand.
 
Payan suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene. He was 52 years old, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. He was a father of four who lived in the area and was simply getting dinner from the taco stand when the crash occurred.
 
Meanwhile, twelve other people in the crowd were hurt, including three who suffered critical injuries.
 
The driver fled the scene and officers began actively searching for her. More than an hour later, the suspect returned to the scene and turned herself in.
 
Police arrested the woman on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and felony hit-and-run.
 
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
